Entering a New Phase
As well as offering an extensive range of recycled and eco-friendly products, Phase is working with logistics partner OfficeTeam, to reduce the environmental impacts of waste, excess packaging, and its fleet management.
Saying ‘No’ to Packaging
Trials to eliminate excess packaging are currently being conducted in London, and will be implemented in 2008 for 90% of Phase customers. Phase products will be delivered using a ‘tote box’ system, replacing the traditional cardboard boxes. As most stationery products are already boxed, there is no need for additional cardboard packaging. The products will be stored in ‘totes’ in the vehicles to prevent damage, and delivered to the end-user in plastic carrier bags. These bags will be collected during the next delivery, and re-used for subsequent deliveries. No unnecessary packaging will be used.
The Ultimate in Paper Recycling
Phase customers will have the opportunity to participate in a recycling initiative. Canvas bags can be delivered to your business premises for recycling waste paper. When you receive your delivery, OfficeTeam will collect your waste paper, and it will be recycled by our paper manufacturer. Collections of cardboard and plastics are planned as the scheme develops.
Reducing ‘Stationery Miles’
Much mention is made of the environmental cost of ‘food miles’, but all logistical operations can involve excess mileage. Phase operates a hub system with logistics partner OfficeTeam. There are 5 stocked warehouses and another 16 distribution points across the country. This eliminates the need for environmentally damaging, long-distance deliveries. Delivery vehicles operate in a strictly defined geographic area, minimising the number of miles your stationery travels. In addition, OfficeTeam currently operates two electric vehicles as part of an initiative to reduce CO2 emissions from its fleet. The introduction of more electric and bio-fuel vehicles is planned to reduce the carbon footprint.
Toner and Inkjet Cartridge Recycling
Phase continue to support The Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation (www.roycastle.org), with the recycling of empty toner and inkjet cartridges. Dedicated boxes are made available for companies wishing to participate in the scheme. Collections are made from your premises by the recycling company, and all proceeds from the ‘empties’ are paid directly to the charity.
Phase Environmental – a Way of Life
Phase’s ‘carbon conscious’ ethic extends to its own operation. Energy saving measures and operating procedures are under regular review to ensure Phase is as environmentally responsible as possible. These include:
- Use of recycled products where possible
- Use of electronic transfer of documents where possible
- Monitoring & reducing energy consumption
- Recycling waste where possible
- Home working to reduce travel
- Use of conference calls, rather than face-to-face meetings, where possible
Future plans include a review of company vehicles to reduce fuel consumption and exhaust emissions.
